Reflection Writing our short story was a little challenging for me. In the beginning of writing I knew that I had to base my short story off of the controversial science fiction topic that i wrote my persuasive essay on, but I didn't know what my story was going to unfold to. Usually I find myself being able to write and write, but for this specif topic I had a hard time making the story come together. Something I found really hard was the conflict and the resolution. Setting up the protagonist, antagonist, setting, and dialogue were pretty easy because i had them in mind from previous writing activities that we had done to accomplish knowing what we would be working with.I learned that writing a short story is challenging and difficult for some, in my opinion if the assignment were to write a long story I feel like I would have been able to develop the characters more and the reader would be more interested and pulled in more, from having a better thought out story to read.
In this project we also analyzed many science fiction films along with literature. I think when we did that it helped me with my story a lot because I had a better understanding of what I could do to improve my writing. I think the main thing that helped me was seeing examples from other stories that i could incorporate into my story to make it more science fiction. In my opinion I think I could have done much better with my writing if we had more time with the project. Comparing this piece to some of my writing earlier in the year, I think it has improved slightly. I feel like I could do better if it was more of a free topic creative writing assignment. |
Project DescriptionWhat will the world look like 100 years from now?
This was the main objective to answer in the project. In this project we were required to write a persuasive essay on a science fiction topic of our choice, as well as a short story. While writing the persuasive essay we had to fine at least 3 resources to back up our reasoning. My topic that I chose was the dying sun. After the essay portion was completed, we started writing our short stories. In addition to what was required, we also analyzed scifi films and literature to determine how the authors use literary and visual devices to effectively and creatively communicate their ideas. Process: The process of writing the story was interesting. We had a lot of editing and revision sessions which I appreciated a lot because having someone revise and edit something for me and telling me whats wrong with it or something I can improve on always helps.I chose my topic, the dying sun because I thought it sounded interesting and also because I wanted a challenge. It took me a while to get inspired to have my plot and essential basics of my story, but i think i got most of my inspiration through pictures and paintings i saw online of post apocalyptic settings thorough out the world. It helped me a lot with my setting, but in some of the pictures, it was almost like i could see my characters and what was going on in my story happening in the pictures and artwork. Artifact & Lead-in This is my introduction paragraph. The way set up the context for the story was a news reporter giving the daily news report for the first time since the people of Los Angeles. “Coming live from KTS7, I’m Howard Collins bringing the daily news report for today, January 20th, 2112. Today marks two weeks that we have been in the mid-city disaster shelter. Recently North America along with the whole world has been struck by many natural disasters. There have been devastating tsunamis in Asia and massive earthquakes in North America. The death count so far is high. Approximately 3.5 billion have been killed in the past two weeks. Many people have been reported missing and have loved ones searching for them. The shelters have taken in as many people as they could. But as for the ones that are trying to survive on their own in the remains of their homes, do not have much of a chance. Those families might have not made it. I’m Howard Collins and that is all for your 3:00 afternoon news, stay tuned for aftershock predictions later this evening with Sandra Jameson.” |
